I graduated from University College Dublin with an MA in Philosophy and started working shortly afterwards with Canada Life in the New Business Department. It was a wide ranging role and in my two and a half years there, I had daily dealings with the Underwriting Department with both areas being closely linked in the day-to-day processing of applications.
Underwriting is a very specific skill within the Financial Services industry and I was fortunate to work in a company where the underwriters were very accessible and friendly, enabling me to understand their role while still working in New Business. When a vacancy opened up in underwriting, I was in a position to apply and am now three years working as a Junior Underwriter.
My role involves looking into the medical background of clients and assessing the level of risk they pose to the company. I have been undergoing continuous training over the past three years which has involved various courses and seminars, while also learning from the day-to-day underwriting of cases. I will soon be in a position to take my underwriting exam within the next year and obtain an underwriting qualification which is recognised industry wide.
I believe Canada Life has an excellent working environment with good opportunity for career progression.
